Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson

This National Book Award Finalist and compelling novel is set in New York City during the Revolutionary War.

Description:
If an entire nation could seek its freedom, why not a girl?
After being sold to a cruel couple in New York City, a slave named Isabel spies for the rebels during the Revolutionary War.

This thought-provoking and gripping novel gives a different view of the Revolutionary War. Isabel along with her younger sister Ruth expect to be freed when their owner dies. Instead, they are sold to a cruel and unscrupulous Loyalist couple who live in New York City where tension between Patriots and Loyalists is strong. This story drew me in from the very first page and kept my attention to the last! Laurie Halse Anderson accurately depicts the ruthlessness of slave masters and gives insight into the experiences and opinions of slaves. A must read!

Another must read by Laurie Halse Anderson: Fever, 1793
