The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate is a 2010 Newbery Honor Book and a wonderful historical fiction novel with an active, interesting, and inquisitive heroine, Callie Vee.Book Description:
In central Texas in 1899, eleven-year-old Callie Vee Tate learns about love from the older three of her six brothers and studies the natural world with her grandfather which leads to an important discovery.
I really loved this book and its believable characters: Callie's six brothers, her mother and father, and her cantankerous grandfather who does science experiments and loves nature. Callie shares this love and is happy to borrow her grandfather's copy of Darwin's Evolution of the Species. On the other hand, Callie's parents find her to be independent and stubborn and would like her to learn to darn socks and cook like a lady. Callie's uncertainty about her own interests and the expections placed upon her by her parents and society will certainly resonate with all readers.
